Why join WESTMONT SPEECH & DEBATE?

Speech and Debate is one of the staples of Westmont High School. Our chapter in the National Forensic League was founded just a couple of months after the school opened. For over forty years, students have dedicated themselves to this activity, weaving a long history of incredible, unparalleled success. Where else in the Westmont yearbooks can you find two California State Champions (1994, 2004)? Where else can you find four students who placed among the top ten at the National Championships (1971,'75,'78, 2003)? The competitive trophies and plaques that shine in the front office only represent one form of success that our Warriors of Words achieve. Those who never advance to a final round still develop essential interpersonal skills that empower them to navigate their lives with confidence. You can spot a speech and debate student a mile away. They are attentive listeners, perceptive critics, thorough analysts, entertaining storytellers, and they walk with the self-assured aura of a young adult who not only knows what's going on in the world, but has plenty of ideas for how to improve it. The students who compete on our team understand how hard work, ambition, and determination are fundamental to a fulfilling life. That's why they attend Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, and countless other prestigious colleges and universities. Speech and debate is the single most attractive activity to admissions offices because its students are already challenging themselves academically, expressing themselves eloquently, and maturing exponentially. That is the true success of our speakers and debaters -- our Warriors of Words.
